Inteprid Ibex Alpha 6 impresions.

Mar, 23/09/2008 - 4:38pm

As I did with hardy alpha 6 , i downloaded the iso un Sunday, willing to tested on a vmachine.

But on Monday I changed my mind , decided to install it on my laptop (also have a little talk with nxvl)

Here are my impresions about the all process

Boot & Installation

  • Cd boot as spected
  • Properly displayed the menu
  • Direct intallation never boot
  • Live Session worked fine
  • Installation from live was ok (like the new partition graphics)

Installation process reported no problem

Log in &  hardware Configuratión

  • GDM worked
  • my display resolution was 800×600 (I have a Nvidia chipset)
  • Sound worked
  • USB ports worked
  • Keyboard worked except from some fn keys (they worked good on hardy)
  • Touchpad a little slow
  • Integrated Webcam worked (checked with Gnome cheese)
  • Jockey crash, couldn’t test atheros driver provided for it

For my nvidia chipset configuration I traid EnvyNG but it never opened, i manually download the driver and installed after i return with a better resolution.

Customization & Software

  • Great look
  • New human Theme Rocks!
  • Pidgin works fine
  • OpenOffice 2.4 is quite fast now (waiting ooo 3)
  • Rhythmbox works very
  • Terminator didn’t open
  • The new network configuration interfase works fine but can be a little confuse

here is my Desktop

To Do.

  • Test sound recording
  • Test LiveUSB from live session
  • Test Suspend and Hibernate
  • Test DVD playback
  • Tray to make work the applications that didn’t work

So far Intrepid is rocking!!

Welcome Ghanima :) - My Own, precious… Notebook

Mar, 24/06/2008 - 4:51pm

On last friday, finally a got to buy a notebook (laptop) I call it Ghanima (from Frank Herbert’s Dune Novel) [1]

She is a Compaq Presario F754

Specs:

  • AMD Semprom 3600+
  • 1Gb RAM
  • 120Gb HD
  • Nvidia Graphics
  • Integrated Webcam
  • Black Elegant Case
  • No Windows Vista sticker on it, from factory :)

The Salesman also included a Logitech V220 Cordless mouse , 4Gb Kingston flash drive and a Backpak for it.

The first thing that I did was brand it with ubuntu sticker  and then install Hardy, It work well except by the Nvidia Driver and Wireless (Atheros). Envy (thanks Alberto Milone) make a really got job finding out the perfect driver for my Nivida graphics and ndiswrapper (thanks ndiswrapper team)help me with the Wireless.

Well After a couple of days i finally customized like i want :) see the results

[1]Ghanima means in Fremen tongue : “something acquired in battle”. I like it because I really battle a lot for it

Weekend Advocacy

Mar, 10/06/2008 - 11:18am

On Saturday, walking across the Ripley Max Mall checking out some notebooks I found out that there was some Olidata notebooks with Ubuntu Pre-Installed :) I started testing them and realize that were installed with Gutsy.

After a couple of minutes a Clerk ask, Would you like to know more about the product?, I said : Yes, of course. so he talked about the hardware and when he came to the OS he said: It comes with some linux, but you can format the HD and install Windows XP.

In that moment I realize that Clerks need urgent update about Ubuntu, so took out my hardy ship it  copy and gave him it. also told him that I will be back tomorrow (Sunday) to demonstrate the installation and configuration.

Well Sunday was a good beginning, The Clerk told to his co - workers :). The results were: 2 Laptop full installed : Ubuntu + Compiz Fusion + Restricted Extras. Obiously Compiz Fusion leave them with the mouth open, special because there were on simple notebooks (Pentiun Celeron, 512Mb Ram, no special graphic card) also some convinced clients :)

Conclusions:

Ubuntu Advocacy also must target clerks and Retailers because their influence in the final customer is crucial and if they underestimate Linux, customer will go with the wrong info about it.

I will keep looking fordward to aproach the sales managers to talk about it
